Achievements

Sharp increase in intercontinental capacity

Increase in the number of networks connected: from 4 in early 1998 to 15 by the end of 2001

Increase in the number of peering partners as well as their interconnect capacities

Milestones
  • November 1997: transatlantic circuit between TEN-34 PoP in Frankfurt and TeleGlobe's PoP in New York operational.
  • January 1998: line from TeleGlobe's PoP in New York to MCI's Perriman facility operational.
  • June 1998: connection to USA and the wider Internet upgraded from 34 to 45Mbps.
  • January 1999: with transition to TEN-155, transatlantic STM-1, provided by MCI/Worldcom and connected between the TEN-155 PoP in Frankfurt and a DANTE PoP at Telehouse, New York (and STM-1 local loop to UUNET) operational.
  • June 1999: second 155Mbps link installed between London and New York.
  • October 1999: interconnection between TEN-155 and NACSIS upgraded to 10Mbps; 45Mbps interconnection between DANTE US connectivity and Abilene operational.
  • February 2000: connectivity to Abilene upgraded to 100Mbps.
  • November 2000: new 155Mbps line between Paris and New York operational; connectivity to the Canadian research network CA*net upgraded from 10 to 15Mbps.
  • December 2000: interconnection with Abilene upgraded by an extra 622Mbps on an additional OC-12 (POS); new interconnection agreement with ESnet, the American Energy Science network, signed; for the first time, this agreement offers a shared-cost model for transatlantic connectivity.
  • January 2001: Interconnection with CA*net upgraded to 30Mbps (ATM).
