Multicast Services - Mbone February 1998 -
Objective Improving efficiency in delivering multicast services to NRENs, initially through TEN-34, overcoming three shortcomings: manageability, bandwidth usage and scalability
Achievements Provision of a resilient multicast backbone resolving problems of manageability, bandwidth usage and scalability
Milestones
  • February 1998: reorganisation of Mbone started
  • April 1998: migration to new Mbone topology on TEN-34 completed
  • October 1998: TEN-34 Mbone declared a success
  • April 1999: preparation for migration of Mbone to TEN-155 - installing and testing new set-up as part of QTP (for details see paper "TEN-155 Multicast" below)
  • November 1999: multicast tests results in QTP Interim Report (see QTP Document Library)
  • June 2000: multicast tests results in QTP Final Report (see QTP Document Library)
  • October 2001: migration to GÉANT infrastructure, culminating in GÉANT Multicast Service.
