Objective(s)

The project’s overall objectives are:

  • To plan, build and operate a multi-gigabit pan-European backbone research network interconnecting Europe's national research and education networks (NRENs)
  • To conduct joint research into the development of networking technologies and services
  • To pursue initiatives targeted at closing the 'digital divide
  • To explore the future of research networking

Achievements

GÉANT2 has played a key role in shaping global research and education over the past 4 years. By connecting researchers, the network enables the best minds across Europe and the world to together pursue collaborative and ground-breaking research activities that were previously impossible or inefficient due to limited and poor quality data connections.

(Co-)Funding

The programme of activities is co-funded by the European Commission within the GN2 contract, which is part of the EC’s Sixth R&D Framework Programme (often referred to as FP6). The remainder of the funding is provided by the NRENs that will be connected to the network. The contract between the project partners and the European Commission provides total funding from the EC of 93 million euro for four years from 1 September 2004.

Partners

The GÉANT2 project is a collaboration between 30 European national research and education networks (NRENs), DANTE and TERENA.
